How to Clean & Organize Your Garage

Clean Out Your Garage with Our Helpful Tips

It’s not always easy to figure out how to organize a messy garage. However, if there’s anything for certain, it’s that a garage full of junk is stressful, headache-inducing, and hard to look at.

If your garage looks like a whirlwind of trash just blew through, then maybe it’s time to do something about it. Puget Sound Junk Removal is Snohomish County’s local garage cleaning and junk removal professionals, and we’ll lend you our knowledge so you can declutter your garage quickly. That way, it stops giving you migraines, and you can make room to park your car again, too!

Remove Everything

The first step sounds simple, but it’s easier said than done. You need to remove everything from your garage. You see, it’s much easier to clean your garage if you start with a blank slate, and the only way to get there is by making sure nothing is left behind. Pick a day when you don’t have anywhere to be, then start lugging things out to the driveway.
Some garage items are going to be heavy, such as old toolboxes and shelves. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend or a family member for help with this project. That way, you can move even your heaviest garage items. You might have to pay your helper with pizza, but it’ll be worth it in the end!

Decide What Should Go

Now that everything has been removed from the garage, it’s time to sort everything into two categories. The first category is items that you should keep. Consider which items you’ve used in the past year, and which items have sentimental value. The items that don’t meet these criteria? Well, they fall into a second category—items that should be disposed of.
Garage junk that we encounter the most includes:

  • Old Appliances
  • Electronics
  • Toolboxes
  • Gardening Equipment
  • Bagged Trash
  • Boxes and Bins
  • Barbecue Grills

Disposal

Disposing of your unwanted items might be as simple as putting them into your collection bin. However, if you have too much waste, or if you have items that you expect the pickup service to leave behind, then disposal may be your responsibility instead. That’s okay, though, because do-it-yourself disposal gives you an opportunity to get rid of garage junk the eco-friendly way. For example, any items you don’t want that are still in good condition can be donated to places like the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
Whether you donate your junk or need to take it to a recycling or disposal site, make sure you have a vehicle you can transport the junk with. A two-seater probably isn’t going to get the job done, so if necessary, rent a truck, or ask a friend if they have a larger car they can help you with.

Cleaning

Now that your garage is empty, why not take some time to do some basic chores? This is a great opportunity to sweep, mop, and dust around your garage. That way, you can get rid of dust, dirt, grime, and maybe even a spider web or two. Set the stage for your new and improved garage so it can truly shine once you’re finished with your work.

Reorganization

Now that the junk is out of the way, it’s time to move all the items you wanted to keep back into the garage. Think back to when your garage was cluttered at the beginning of the process. Did anything in particular bug you about the garage? Did you find that items were located too high on the shelves? Were you unsatisfied with how items were arranged in their storage bins? Whatever you didn’t like about how your garage was arranged before, now’s your chance to resolve that.
By the time your garage has been reorganized, take a moment to admire your work. You got rid of so much unnecessary junk. You cleaned up all the filth. Best of all, there’s room for your car again, meaning no more having to park your car out in the driveway!
